My First Time Using Epinephrine

Illustration for: My First Time Using Epinephrine

I’d carried an auto-injector for fifteen years before I ever had to use it. I’d half convinced myself I never would. Then one wrong bite changed that.

It happened fast

A dessert at a friend’s dinner โ€” described as “definitely peanut-free” โ€” wasn’t. Within minutes my throat felt thick and my skin went hot and blotchy. The old instinct to “wait and see” kicked in, but I’d rehearsed this moment in my head a hundred times.

I used it, and I’d do it again

I gave myself the injection in my outer thigh, and someone called emergency services immediately. Within minutes the worst symptoms eased. The paramedics were glad I’d acted early rather than waiting.

The lessonEpinephrine is safe and it works. Hesitating is the real danger. If you think it might be anaphylaxis, use it and call for help โ€” don't wait to be sure.

After

I was shaken for days, but also strangely empowered. The thing I’d feared most, I’d handled. Now I never second-guess carrying two injectors, and I never let “it’s probably fine” override what my body is telling me.
