Reading Food Labels Like a Pro
Grocery shopping with a peanut allergy is a skill, and like any skill it gets easier with practice. Here’s how I read labels without spending an hour in every aisle.
Start with the allergen statement
In many countries, manufacturers must declare major allergens in plain language. I scan for the bold “Contains: peanuts” line first. But I never stop there — that line doesn’t always capture cross-contact risk.
Understand “may contain” warnings
Statements like “may contain peanuts” or “made in a facility that processes peanuts” are voluntary in many places and inconsistent between brands. For my level of sensitivity, I treat them seriously and usually avoid those products.
Re-check every single time
Recipes change without warning. A product that was safe last month can be reformulated. I re-read the label every purchase, even for items I buy regularly.
